OK, so I’m posting about Haiti. I know you probably have compassion fatigue. But snap out of it. Besides the fact that I’m about to tell you about something awesome, Haiti is an absolute mess.
This had huge potential to be naff, but it’s not. Monome Community, a collective of people who use an electronic music controller called (fairly obviously) the Monome, has put together a beautiful compilation of peaceful electronic music. It covers a fair amount of chilled out electronic ground, but there’s a thread of continuity in the similar resonant synth sounds these guys go for.
The end result is a really beautiful double-legnth record that functions equally well as a contrast to the brutally messed up images coming out of Haiti, a perfect for soundtrack for your hangover tomorrow or as wishful thinking for a place that is pretty unimaginably hellish at the moment.
The whole record is playable on the player above. It’s the kind of thing where everyone will like different tracks, but my favourite is the slowly evolving structure of The B-Roll’s Early Morning.
All the proceeds go to Médecins Sans Frontières, who are kind of awesome at this kind of disaster relief stuff. Bandcamp (the mp3 sales site) doesn’t take a comission and I can vouch for it being secure as I use it to sell my own mp3s. It’s a very smooth process to buy and download things there too. So go do it.
