Recording has been going well through December. Can’t remember what I told you last time I wrote one of these updates, but I’ve just about finished mixing a track called Six Times, which was going to be the first single but now that it’s done is probably a bit too pussy for that. I want something a bit stronger and more upfront.
A couple of weeks before Christmas, I started to panic about my live show. To put it bluntly, it was a mess; all of my files were in the wrong places and nothing was working properly. I’d also set a deadline to have some video projections ready for them, but hadn’t even started on that. So basically, I spent most of December re-arranging my music to sit in my live set and chopping up video to go with it.
In the process, I’ve just about finished the new mix of Five Times, which alongside one of the new tracks Rockets has a kind of distorted tribal house/breakbeat sound that I think is pretty fresh. Rhythms flying all over the place around a central house beat. It’s nice. I played Rockets at my NYE show a few nights back and it didn’t work too well, but with my music it’s always a case of finding the right schtick to sell each song to the crowd, so pretty much every time I’ve debuted a song it’s fallen flat on its’ arse. Just takes a bit of feeling out people’s reactions, I find.
In the process of putting together the NYE set and the one for Southbound this weekend, I’ve been able to listen to all the music I’ve been working on for the last few months as a whole and it’s sounding very good. This is definately turning out to be a dance record, even if it is a very wierd one, which is what I wanted. It’s not an easy style for me to work in, but it’s how I’ve always envisioned these songs. I’ve just let myself go off on undancable tangents before, which has actually been really great for this record because it’s made the songs more interesting; they still have that off-kilter energy, it’s just balanced by disco heat now.
Anyway, I’m rambling, but basically the record feels like it’s getting some cohesion to it now. Yay. I’m going to go work on it instead of procrastinating with a blog now.
