[REC] Finally Recording Stuff

(Me, a bit bored in my studio, tonight, while doing menial editing work. Photo by my webcam on a long timer while I stare at Ableton Live.)

Spent most of this week trying to make this fucking record in between seemingly every financial/medical/etc institution trying to take my time away from me. In the time I did get, I felt like I wasn’t making much progress as I was tying up loose ends on some songwriting that needed a bit of fixing. Since that’s what I always do, I was a bit frustrated that I wasn’t getting into the serious mixing down and audionerdery that I’d been looking forward to.

It’s already pretty mentally intense working on this thing; especially since real life rolls on around me as I have to to record at home. I’m totally preoccupied with recording and when I have to spend time doing something else, it’s totally fucking  with my head. Really, I wish I could just hide away somewhere and polish this thing off for two months and not have to cloud my head with other stuff, but there’s financial and logistical reasons why I have to stay here.

Anyway, enough emo bitching. I did some good work tonight, updating the first song I wrote for this thing, Nice, because you can hear my 2003-era glitch fixation on it. So I’ve moulded it into this kind of sexy slow jam, French pillow talk kind of thing - not what I was really expecting but none of the best ideas ever are. I also laid down the first draft of vocals for what I’m calling Rockets (at the moment), playing with some falsetto ideas and tinkering with pitching my vocals in Ableton to find some new harmonies. I haven’t played that live yet, but it’s somehow become a bit of a showcase for my inner Liza Minnelli (speaking of which, check out today’s Drum Media Perth for my review of Liza’s show last week). Annoyingly, I’ve come down with a cold tonight so it sounds more like Liza now than in her glory days, but I’ll re-record them later.

It looks like I’m making some slow progress now. I think I have an idea of how this whole thing is going to sound. Yay.

I’m going to go sleep now, it’s been a long week.
