[REC] Finally Recording Stuff
(Me, a bit bored in my studio, tonight, while doing menial editing work. Photo by my webcam on a long timer while I stare at Ableton Live.)
Spent most of this week trying to make this fucking record in between seemingly every financial/medical/etc institution trying to take my time away from me. In the time I did get, I felt like I wasn’t making much progress as I was tying up loose ends...

If You Can't Dig Ellen Allien We Can Still Be...
Ahhhhh, Ellen Allien. Probably one of my favourite producer/DJ’s ever. She deals in increasingly sparse, spacious techno these days, which I’ve grown to love. Particularly tonight, as I’ve had Shock One’s brain-melting d&b tune Polygon in my head all night and it’s made it hard for me to sleep. Allien’s last album Sool is fucking great at lulling me...

The Morning After
So it’s saturday morning. I’m feeling a bit like this must’ve happened last night:
The show at Mojo’s last night was fantastic by the way. One of those gigs where I feel totally in control of my craft. And the audience were a blast. Somehow, I mustered up some enormous energy to dance to Shock One’s absolutely filthy set of drum n bass straight after mine.

Birthday Present Ideas
OK, so my birthday is coming up in November. Can someone please get me one of these?
Well, actually, this Subcycle thing is an instrument some guy in Oregon has built for himself. So I probably can’t have one. But if you could get me one anyway it would be, like, the best present ever.
If you want to follow this guy’s progress, head to http://www.subcycle.org/ .
One Movement // Booking Agent Joy
This photo by Ashryn Romaro from FasterLouder totally captures the vibe of last night’s show. So much fun. They’ve also done a very flattering review of the gig.
In other, more practical news, I am no longer my own booking agent. That title now belongs to the charming Laith Tierney and his lovely army of minions at Tyranocorp. So all booking enquiries should go to him at tyranocorp...

One Movement // Super VC
I had an absolute blast at One Movement yesterday, running around the city between conference sessions, showcase gigs, local fringe festival shows, afterparties and my own pretty fucking awesome little showcase in a laneway behind King Street.
The non-Me highight of the festival though was Chinese band Super VC, who mixed up western influences like The Beatles and 70’s glam with a...

Comedowns With Marianne
A bit of classic, understated synth-pop to help ease your sunday morning comedown from a woman who understands how they feel. Marianne Faithfull is one of my favourite vocalists, and there’s something about her ravaged-sounding vocal chords that makes me feel a bit better when I’m in recovery.
I’m playing One Movement tonight (Sunday) at 9pm if your hangover has eased by...
Last Shows Of 2009
2009 has been all kinds of good to me. I’ve done three national tours, put out a cd, played heaps of festivals and won myself a shiny wee award. I’m pretty delighted with what I’ve done this year. Now it’s time to start looking at how I can make awesomeness happen again in 2010, so I won’t be playing any shows until January.
In my time off, I’ll be working...

Gobstopper
I almost choked on my dinner when I first saw this trailer. Thank fuck it’s just a spoof trailer for a horror version of Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. I mean, the Johnny Depp version of from a couple of years ago was bad enough.
Thanks to Stella for the link.

The Transients' One Day
Another slice of excellent local electro, this time from The Transients who have been constantly improving over the last few years but lately have switched up into some truly next level stuff. This is an appropriately nasty video for a dirty, nasty song. And as you probably know from my artwork I love the lofi computer glitch visual style they’ve used on this.
Their EP is on iTunes;...

Found Sound Orchestra
Mash-up guru and my sometime collaborator, team9, has just put out a new record with his project The Found Sound Orchestra. It’s a sample-based record that fuses together some of the wierdest samples around. It sounds like a triangulation of The Avelanches, Lemon Jelly, late ‘90’s chillout compilations and the production techniques of a producer reared on mashups and electro...

Because I Need To Post Something That's Not Goth...
This is a new video clip by a band I’ve played with a lot in Perth, the Voltaire Twins. Their EP is on iTunes, I suggest getting at least this single mix and maybe Lords’ extended disco remix, which I actually prefer at the moment. Anyway, watch the clip below, it’s pretty great if you’re into clever electro-pop stuff.

Shock Rock/Laptops
You’ll all be delighted to know I have a new laptop. I am. I’m a little relieved.
What else has been up? Well, as I mentioned before, I went to see Marilyn Manson on monday. It was pretty raw/nasty/excellent until the end, when it was just nasty. I was there reviewing for Drum Media Perth. Rather than going over the whole thing again, here’s what I wrote for them:
From The...
Something bad happened.
Those of you who follow me on Twitter/Myspace/Facebook/etcetcetc will know this already, but late on Sunday night I managed to spill hot chocolate all over my laptop. Yes, I know, it’s not the most rock-sounding of liquid beverages, but that’s what happened. I’m not going to lie and say it was wine or tequila or Awesome Juice or something just to impress you.
The cocoa-bath meant my laptop...

Monday Night Is Gothic Party Night
I’m going to see Marilyn Manson tomorrow night at Challenge Stadium. I’m not sure how excited I am about that yet. I’ve seen him live twice; during the first time at the Big Day Out, he got hit in the head by a bottle and proceeded to rant at the crowd for half an hour, so that sucked. The second time was on his last album tour, and it was surprisingly good, though it felt a bit...
"...but I'm definately feeling those three this...
I just read my post from last night. While I was on the right track sentiment-wise, I can’t believe I used the phrase “I’m definately feeling those three”. Who am I, Randy Jackson?
By way of apology, here’s a video clip I actually hadn’t seen until today for a TISM’s Greg! The Stop Sign!, which I used to listen to a lot in high school.
Some Triobelisk For The Weekend?
I was doing some research into some different ways of selling music on the web and I came across this page on Bandcamp by Triobelisk. I’d read about them on some electro blog or another last year when they put out their last record, but hadn’t thought much of them. Tonight I had time to listen to some spacey disco though, so I clicked around their new EP Distant Star.
The...

[ REC: ] Haven't Started Yet
OK, Me, here’s how it’s going to work; by February next year, you’re going to need to have your second album at least almost finished. No arguments. No more excuses. No more fucking around with new songs or thinking that what you’ve got isn’t ready. If it’s not ready, it’s not gonna be. You’ve got too many songs lined up for this thing anyway. Just...
